Switch gradually over to a diet which is based on fresh natural food, without going overboard and losing balance.
If your basic diet is good and sound, you can still improve the condition of your skin by taking in extra nutrients. With water soluble vitamins such as vitamin C, you can even exceed these numbers safely if you feel the need to. This can be found in many forms of oily fish, or for a vegetarian source try linseed. There are also gamma-linolenic acids, which are found in evening primrose oil. Keeping the right nutrients in your diet can be enough to make the difference between having itchy skin constantly irritate you, and being able to lose all trace of it. Don't expect instant results, but do expect a steady improvement over time.
You can combat itchy dry skin far more effectively if you combine a good solid diet with external treatments as well. Firstly, go easy on the bathing, especially if you habitually use commercial soaps with chemical ingredients. The vast majority of people do too much bathing, and they stay in the water for too long. Take a shower, and do just enough to get clean and no more. When you dry yourself, use a dabbing motion and not a rubbing one. When you are dry, apply a moisturizer very gently. Virgin coconut oil is an extremely effective and safe moisturizer.
The moisturizer you use is one of your greatest defenses against itchy dry skin, because it will provide not only immediate relief in the form of moisture, it will also provide vital nutrients which will reinforce the nutrients you will be taking in through your diet. Moisturizing is the best short term defense also if you suddenly find that your skin is becoming irritating and needs quick relief. Combining this easy to apply and safe technique with a long term improvement in your diet and lifestyle will give you an ever growing immunity against the problem of itchy dry skin.
