Dry Skin Explained

Millions of people suffer from dry skin. Luckily, there are lots of ways to combat this skin condition.

Dermatologist Barney Kenet from New York Presbyterian Hospital says there are as many as 100 million people with dry skin in the United States alone. There are a variety of underlying causes that make a person susceptible to this skin type. Some people are just born with the tendency to have dry skin, just as others naturally have oily skin or sensitive skin. Other factors include using the wrong products on your skin, sun damage, aging, allergies and certain medications.

If you are not experiencing any other symptoms such as rosacea or eczema, then you probably don't need to see a doctor or dermatologist as your first course of action. Step one is to evaluate the level of dryness you are experiencing and any other issues that accompany it. You may have dry, tight skin all over your face or only in certain areas (this is often a sign of combination skin.) crow's feet, laugh lines and frown lines may also be noticeable on the face. In some cases there may be flaky patches that itch. And, your lips may even be prone to dryness and chapping.

Next, take a look at how you are caring for your skin. Unbelievably, there are women and men (more often men) who don't use any kind of skincare product on their face. If you do not use products other than soap, consider implementing a daily skincare program. And on the subject of soap, it can be a leading factor in dryness. You do not want to use the same soap you'd use on your body on your face, as it can be extremely harsh and drying. Deodorant soaps for the body contain harsh detergents and chemicals that can have a detrimental effect on delicate facial skin.

When selecting a cleanser, you can find bar soap varieties. However search in the skincare aisle rather than the regular soap aisle. One exception to this rule might be Dove Soap, which contains moisturizing cream and has a good reputation as a facial soap. Many people like liquid cleansers, which come in gel, oil, cream, milk, lotion and even foam variety. There are even cleansing waters that do not even require rinsing, such as Caudalie Cleansing Water available at stores like Sephora. The type of cleanser you choose is a matter of preference, however make sure it is especially formulated for dry skin types.

Ok, now you've chosen a cleanser. Use according to package directions, which will usually say to apply to damp skin morning and night, massage in then rinse thoroughly. When drying the face, pat the skin with a soft towel rather than rubbing it. Follow up your cleanse with a soothing, moisturizing toner. One toner made for dry skin that is natural and affordable is Burt's Bees Rosewater and Glycerin Toner. Unlike cleanser, toner is not rinsed off. Wait a few minutes after this step before proceeding.

The next step in the process is to apply a moisturizing serum. Serums are usually clear and have a slippery consistency. You only need a few drops to cover the whole face because this type of product expands and readily absorbs. One product is Keri Renewal Serum, although you can find serums from all kinds of brands both drugstore and upscale. Examples include Olay, L'Oreal, Neutrogena, Kinerase, Perricone and many more. Once again, wait a few minutes to let the serum penetrate into the skin.

After the serum, it's time to apply a moisturizing treatment. Dry skin most often responds well to a cream formula. Look for a day moisturizer with SPF so you don't have to apply a separate sunscreen to the face. Sun damage not only leads to dry skin but also discoloration and can even be a factor in skin cancer. If you don't use a moisturizer with SPF, follow up with a sunscreen made for the face. Your night skincare routine will be the same, except you won't need sunscreen and you should swap your day cream for a night cream.

If you are a cosmetics wearer, it is important to select quality makeup products formulated for dry skin. Many products do double duty by moisturizing and nourishing the skin while providing coverage, such as the Cover Girl Simply Ageless line which contains Olay ingredients. If you don't need a lot of coverage, substitute tinted moisturizer for foundation. Use a cream blush rather than powder for a dewy finish, and for the lips choose a sheer gloss or tinted balm formulated with lots of nourishing ingredients as many lipsticks are too drying. Never go to bed without removing your makeup, as this can accelerate problems with the skin such as dryness, blemishes and premature aging.
