How To Effectively Treat Dry Skin Patches

There can be a variety of reasons why dry skin patches form. Sometimes, the reason will be obvious. If you have had an injury to a certain part of the skin, it is inevitable that there will be some dryness left behind. At other times, the answer may be more difficult to find, but it will usually be there somewhere. Anything you do which is harmful to the skin can result in patches appearing virtually anywhere, although it will usually be in a defined area. If you smoke, you are likely to find that your skin becomes dry and wrinkled around the mouth and eyes as you age prematurely, and dry patches can also form in nearby facial areas. Excessive sunbathing can also lead to dry patches where the exposure has been too great.

You can also develop patches of dry skin as a result of being enclosed for long periods of time in an indoor environment. Many modern buildings have been designed and erected with the sole emphasis in saving money, and with none of the care and attention necessary to make the environment hospitable to those who need to work there. This will be even more noticeable in areas which experience a long and cold winter, as the heating will need to be on for longer and at a stronger setting. Areas of the face and arms which are constantly exposed can certainly develop dry patches.

Before you begin to treat dry skin patches on the outside, it is worth taking a moment just to make sure that the skin is receiving enough of the essential nutrients from the inside. If your dietary habits are not ideal, now would be a good time to give them an overhaul. Cut down on the consumption of caffeine and alcohol as they deplete moisture from the body, and also reduce consumption of saturated fat and refined sugar products. Eat plenty of fresh food and make sure all of the essential vitamins and minerals are included in your diet.

Patches of dry skin can be so irritating that it is tempting to constantly rub them. Try to resist that urge if you possibly can, and instead use a moisturizing cream which you can gently dab on and apply. The key to stopping dry skin being constantly irritating is to ration the amount of time you spend bathing. If you are like most people, you will spend too long in contact with water which has been treated with chemicals. The soap you use will also typically be harsh and abrasive, so replace it with a natural oatmeal soap.

The patches themselves can be treated in a variety of ways. One of the most obvious ways of improving skin condition is with a face mask, and there are many possible varieties of these. Masks made with avocados, honey or milk are especially useful at providing a moisturizing effect to the skin, so give these a try if the dry patches are on the face. If they are not, you can still apply the same ingredients to any other part of the body. Try to stick with one type of treatment for an extended time to see how well it works, before you switch over and try something else.

Bathing is something you need to be especially careful with if you have dry skin patches. Keep the amount of time you spend in the shower down to an absolute minimum, and avoid the use of harsh chemical based soaps unless it is absolutely necessary. Dab the skin dry, being especially careful with the affected area. As soon as the skin is dry, use a moisturizer such as virgin coconut oil. This has the dual benefit of moisturizing the skin, and at the same time providing essential nutrients such as vitamins and proteins.

You can also treat dry skin patches with cocoa butters, which are a thicker substance than coconut oil. This can be slightly more difficult to apply, but the concentration of nutrients will compensate for this. Don't be afraid of experimenting with these treatments, as they are all completely natural and harmless. If you find one which is more effective than the others in your case, you will be able to keep using it for as long as it works.
