Types Of Dry Skin Conditions

There are a variety of dry skin conditions that can cause tight, flaky, irritated skin. The first step is to identify the condition that is causing the problem.

Eczema is a condition of the skin that causes a variety of symptoms including dryness. Atopic eczema is the most common variety, and is also called atopic dermatitis. Those with this condition may also be prone to allergies and even asthma. The number one symptom most people experience is itching. A rash is also a common sign of this disorder. You might experience patches of thick, scaly, dry skin which may be discolored.

Treatment for eczema can help eradicate the itching and get rid of the thick, dry patches. One of the easiest things you can do is moisturize the affected area regularly. If you are already working with a dermatologist, he or she can prescribe a medical grade moisturizer for you to use. However in some cases you can find a good product over the counter. When shopping, look for products that contain natural ingredients and are free from fragrances and dyes. One trick to try for dry skin in general, including dry skin caused by eczema, is to apply moisturizer to damp (not wet) skin to help trap moisture. You will then need to wait a few minutes until the skin dries naturally and the moisturizer is well absorbed.

There are some preventative measures you can take as well to help reduce eczema flare-ups. In addition to frequent moisturizing, try to maintain a steady temperature inside your home and if the air is dry, use a humidifier. Try to avoid becoming overheated or sweating profusely. Of course if you exercise, this is probably impossible; so just shower directly afterwards and apply your moisturizer. Stress can even cause flare-ups to be worse, so implement some stress relief tactics into your life. Use detergents for washing clothes that are free from harsh chemicals, fragrances and dyes, and do not wear clothing made from scratchy fabric or clothing that is too tight.

There are certain medical issues that can cause dry skin. For example, hypothyroidism (a disorder where the thyroid is underactive) can cause dry skin. Malnutrition and diabetes are two other medical problems that can lead to dry skin as well. Prescription medications for various conditions can cause dry skin, so be sure to ask your doctor if you are on any prescriptions. If a disorder can be treated, your skin may improve, but in some cases you will need to treat the dry skin separately.

Often dry skin is genetic. Some people just have it with no reason to pinpoint other than that is how they were born. If others in your family have dry skin, you may have this skin type as well. As with other reasons for this problem, you may just need to begin a care routine consisting of the right product for your skin type. Many people with dry skin also experience sensitivity. So, harsh products can make skin tighter, more itchy and more inflamed.

There are many companies these days offering natural and even organic skincare products. They can be purchased online, in drugstores, in health food stores and from other vendors. You can even make your own. These products contain natural oils and botanicals to help treat dry skin without the side effects one may experience from synthetic ingredients if their skin is on the sensitive side. If you are the crafty type you can make an ideal moisturizer with a carrier oil of your choice blended with essential oils.

A homemade oil product is guaranteed to be natural, because you are the one choosing the ingredients. And, this type of concoction can be used as a cleanser and a moisturizer. You can even use it as a dry hair treatment. For moderately dry skin, jojoba oil is idea. Olive oil is better for severe dry skin. Purchase a glass container that is dark amber to avoid spoilage from light. Fill the container with your carrier oil of choice, then add essential oils one drop at a time until you get the desired fragrance. Essential oils are more than just for scent, many of them have moisturizing and healing properties.

Essential oils that may be beneficial for dry skin conditions include lavender, rose, neroli, carrot seed and vetiver. Chamomile and jasmine oils are good for both dry and sensitive skin. The most important thing to remember when working with essential oil blends is to never apply them directly to the skin and add them sparingly to the carrier oil because they are very potent. These types of oil blends can also be used in the bath, on the body and even as a hair conditioner. In addition the fragrance can have calming aromatherapy benefits as well.
