Treating Dry Flaky Skin On Face

If you have dry, flaky skin on face there are a variety of ways to treat the problem. The key is to identify what works best for you and follow a consistent routine when caring for your skin.

Dry facial skin affects millions of people. Some cases are more severe than others. If your skin is very dry, it may feel tight and itchy. And, there may be patches of skin that are actually flaking because they are so dry. There are all kinds of dry skin face products to help this problem, so don't worry that there is no remedy. You might first want to establish why your skin is so dry and flaky, because there are multiple causes.

A good first step may be a medical checkup. Certain medical conditions like an underactive thyroid or diabetes can dehydrate the skin. If you are on prescription medications, ask your doctor if dry skin is a side effect of any of them. If the cause is a medical issue, your skin might improve when the condition is treated. Your doctor can also recommend skincare products to you and even certain foods and vitamins that may help the look and feel of your skin from the inside out. A few examples would be fish oil, flax oil, vitamin E, vitamin C, biotin and collagen. Vitamin E capsules can actually be pricked with a needle and the oil inside squeezed out and applied directly to the skin.

Your environment may also have something to do with your skin. If you live in a hot, dry area then this could be a cause. Air conditioning can cause dry indoor air as well, so you would be dealing with two factors. Cold temperatures often cause dry, irritated skin and the dry heat indoors can make it worse. An easy fix is to run a humidifier in your home, and use protective moisturizers with sunscreen when you head outside. If you do use a humidifier, go for a cool mist humidifier and make sure to clean the device regularly. Changing the water as directed by the instructions is also important to avoid bacterial growth.

After you've looked at factors like health, medication and environment, you can develop a skincare routine that helps fight the problem of dry facial skin. The first product you need is a cleanser to be used twice daily. If your skin is sensitive, choose something that is fragrance free and contains no harsh detergents. A cleansing milk or oil is a great choice. These cleansers do not even lather but they adequately clean and moisturize the skin. One of the most easily attainable and dermatologist recommended cleansers for all skin types is Cetaphil, which comes in bar form and liquid form. It can be purchased at most any drugstore for under $10.

Exfoliation can help scrub away flaky patches, but it is important not to overdo it. Also, select an exfoliating product that has moisturizing ingredients. Exfoliants usually contain ingredients like apricot seeds but look around to see if you can find the most gentle product possible. There are new products with encapsulated microbeads that exfoliate without causing extra dryness or irritation. Also, an exfoliating product should not be used more than twice weekly.

There are treatment creams and serums that contain ingredients like alpha hydroxy acid, glycolic acid and retinol. These ingredients help speed skin cell turnover to reveal new skin, however these products can cause more dryness and irritation especially when you start using them. If this occurs, cut down on use until your skin adjusts. Also, you will want to follow a product of this type with a moisturizer. For flaky, dry skin, choose a thick cream. After applying in the morning, give the cream a few minutes to absorb then follow up with sunscreen. For dry skin around the eye area, use a thick eye cream. At night, switch to a more intensive night cream and skip the sunscreen.

It is important to stay consistent with your skin care. Always start your day with your skincare routine as it will protect your skin throughout the day. At night, it is just as important because the makeup, grime and pollutants from the rigors of your day need to be removed. Also, night creams are formulated to do their job while you sleep, which is a time of total body renewal.

Over time, if you are consistent with your skincare and are using products designed for dry skin you should see an improvement. It may take several months but the longer you use the right products the better your skin will become. If you don't see improvement after six months of using skincare products purchased over the counter, you may want to visit a dermatologist for professional grade products and treatments.
